QMI - SAI Global

SFI 2005-2009
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists and scientists that combines the growing and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality. The SFI 2005-2009 standard spells out the requirements of compliance with the program. SFIS is based on nine principles that address economic, environmental, cultural and legal issues, in addition to a commitment to continuously improve sustainable forest management. The SFIS contains 13 objectives covering sustainable forest management, procurement of wood and fiber, public reporting, continuous improvement and mitigating illegal logging. The Sustainable Forestry Board solely governs the content of the SFI standard and auditing procedures and qualifications.

Chain of Custody and Product Labels
Customers and end users of wood and paper products are becoming more environmentally conscious, increasing the need to provide assurance that products are being produced in a manner sensitive to environmental concerns. The SFI program can help you provide this assurance by using the SFI Chain of Custody standard and on-product labels. Chain of Custody is typically defined as the process of tracking and recording the possession and transfer of wood and fiber from the forests of origin through the different stages of production - primary manufacturing (those sourcing directly from the forest- i.e. sawmill, paper mill), secondary manufacturing (manufacturers of finished wood products, and those paper mills using market pulp), wholesaling, and retailing - to the end user. The SFI program provides options for:

  • Chain of Custody Certification
  • Fiber Sourcing Certification
  • On-product Labeling.
On-product labels are available with or without percent content claims. The labels may be used to demonstrate percent content requirements specified by customers, SFI program participants or label licensees.

SFI audits conducted by QMI – SAI Global are performed by certified environmental management system lead auditors accredited by the RABQSA (Registration Accreditation Board and Quality Society of Australasia) and the Canadian Environmental Auditing Association (CEAA). Independent third parties, such as QMI – SAI Global, register adherence to SFI standards. SFI certification is consistent with internationally recognized principles and procedures, including ISO 19011, the ISO-series standard for environmental auditing.
